I think I’m kinda obligated to put a disclaimer on this one because I know that tears tend to get involved when Justin Bieber gets in the picture, so here’s mine…

*** I have nothing against him. I respect him for being a hard working little trooper, and using that angel voice to increase the sex hormones of prepubescent girls all around the world whilst simultaneously keeping it Disney PG. ***

This is based on my thoughts on his new music video ‘Boyfriend’.

For those of you who have seen the new music video (and If you haven’t, I don’t advise you to, because it’s a waste of your time), you will probably agree that “bad” is not the word to use. It’s simply just embarrassing to watch.

It starts with a close-up of Bieber, looking like an underage lesbian (the hair does it, as always), talking about all the things he would do…if he were our boyfriend. His head is facing the ground, so he makes eye contact by raising his eyeballs to look at the camera, because that apparently is meant to be sexy.

Then we move to a parking lot (origina-al) where he rides up in a sports car that’s way to big in size for him, and flashes his 50-cent-style bling bracelet. When he is driving past the screen, it looks as if he’s just a little kid who’s driving his dad’s car without permission. It’s great that the voice fairies finally came, and his voice has broken, but shiny jewelry, and sitting on his car, pulling girls close to him as he eyes them up and down, lightly licking his cherry lips is just…no. I really don’t think his new flash-car-flash-jewelry-blue-hefner-look suits him, nor is it what people liked about him in the first place.

From what I can gather, people were initially drawn to Justin Bieber because he was the homeboy type. Literally a HOMEboy: A sweet kid belting out songs in his living room with that sensational voice of his. He seemed quite humble, judging by what I saw from his personality whenever he was on TV- something that does not reflect in the Boyfriend music video at all. Furthermore, the video really reminded me of Timberlake’s ‘Like I Love You’ music video. Same setting, as well as same chat-up body language. Perhaps it’s a co-incidence that even the dance choreography is very similar…or maybe the little shit just copied it,.. I wouldn’t put it past him.

The song however, is actually really catchy and I enjoy listening to just the audio version. It sounds a bit like an old school RnB song which I like.

He raps now too apparently… and he’s not bad. Here is Bieber doing a rap over Otis Redding.

Check that shit. He surprised me.

It was with this line of thinking in mind that this mix was created. The trio doesn’t rap (though Sleepy Brown has several albums under his belt), and aren’t the most vocal in the media. They let their music do the talking, and Out Of The Darkness operates along the same lines. In 80 minutes, 50 tracks lay out a compelling case for Organized Noize’s inclusion when Hip-Hop fans are speaking of the royal family of production: Dre, RZA, Premier, Pete Rock and the other usual suspects. No less an authority than Big Rube (for the uninitiated, Rube is the voice of the spoken word pieces on classic records from Aquemini to Sir Lucious Leftfoot, as well as the intro to the Future’s Pluto) narrates the disc, helping guide listeners through two decades of productions ranging from the layers of soulful live instrumentation in “Waterfalls” and the early Outkast material to the hard-hitting drums of “They Don’t Dance No Mo” and “Watch For The Hook.”

The project is co-presented by Devil’s Pie, TSS, 2DopeBoyz and Maurice Garland.com, and the amazing cover artwork was illustrated and designed by illadelphsouL (prints can be purchased here). It’s impossible to capture the breadth of Organized Noize’s discography in 50 tracks, but this mix attempts to provide a starting place for listeners to develop their understanding of one of the most underrated production teams in Hip-Hop history.
