The Sounds Of Mary Jane – Written By Sofia Topsy

The topic of this blog is to discuss songs that talk about weed. Now, before people start smiling wryly or sighing exasperatedly at the topic I have chosen, please take a chance on reading this, and trust me that I will be introducing you to some very good songs. At the end of the day my hopes for this blog is to show you two of my favorite ‘chill out’ artists to listen to.

First up!
Cunninlynguistics: a trio from Lexington, Kentucky and Atlanta, Georgia: AKA (the left coast). I would provide you with more information on the history of the group itself, but I thought about it and I won’t. To be honest, it’s really not that interesting, and you can search it yourself on online J I found them on iTunes through the Genius recommendations a year ago and ever since; I can’t go a week without listening to one of their songs.
I will be linking you to two of their songs, which I am extremely fond of. I have played these songs for my friends on numerous occasions and they all fell in love with this band! I genuinely hope that you also enjoy listening to them.

There are a number of reasons as to why I think this song is so great.
1) Firstly, the awesome use of instrumental violin at the beginning. Whoever thought of mixing rap with classical music is a genius! I am a huge fan of violin orchestra, and when it’s blended with a hip-hop beat I honestly consider it a masterpiece!

2) They are truly cunning linguists! Don’t be fooled by the content in the first verse. “The lyrics make me high even though I stay away from Canibus” They are not referring to weed they are referring to Canibus the rapper, (who you should also check out).
On a whole their lyrics are quite clever and very amusing. I must admit a lot of the time, they don’t make 100% sense to me, but that’s probably because I’m a white seventeen-year-old Brit, who likes to think she’s black. Then again the final verse of the verse of the song does say:
You know how we do. I mean, you probably don’t know how we do… but you’re about to find out.”

3) This is the type of music that’s ideal when you want to chill out with your friends at home. It makes you feel like you’re in a dream, it feels trippy but at the same time you can’t help but bop your head to it with a smile. Great song!

Now this song is purely for entertainment purposes. Every pothead will appreciate it, and everyone who doesn’t smoke will still probably enjoy it. Similarly to ‘Lynguistics’ the lyrics of the ‘Brownie Song’ are very diverting and even funny in some cases.
“Call a nurse your boys higher than Google Earth” I have to admit…I enjoyed that bit. “Going in the house proves way too hard, when I fall in the front door and land in the back yard”.
Okay…So you wouldn’t exactly call them lyrically acclaimed, but there is no doubt that people listening will nod affectionately to it.

Weed is a controversial topic that nearly everyone has an opinion on. Younger people who blaze might say that it’s gods gift, while adults will adopt a more biased and negative approach. That is why I would like to introduce you to one more group whom I am even more passionate about. “People Under The Stairs”, a duo from LA also known as PUTS, formed in 1997.

So what is so great about this song? I am actually finding it impossible to comprehend my feelings for it as I get so overwhelmed by it.
1) The piano, followed by the African drum beat at the beginning is mesmerising! I don’t know how they did it but they managed to make a song dedicated to weed, by completely romanticising it!
2) Unlike Cunninlynguistics and every other artist who sings about weed: Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa etc., Acid Raindrops do a remarkable job in re-introducing the use of pot as a stimulating and spiritual thing.
I am not saying this in any way to encourage the use of weed. I am saying it because this is one of the only songs that’s about getting high, which actually gives me chills. I have yet to hear a song about sex that gives me the same feeling.
3) The song is absolutely beautiful from beginning to end. Simple as that! The beat and the lyrics are right on point.“Let the problems in your mind become ancient artifacts…The stress is out your mind you feel like the weight was lifted”
I would actually love to post ALL the lyrics from the song, but they are actually attached to the link bellow the video link, and I really hope you pay attention to them! I have so much love for this song that I’m genuinely overwhelmed by it.

I really hope you enjoy it and also listen to more of their songs, In particular ‘San Francisco Knights’.
