I think it’s safe to say that over the past couple years, Mac Miller has slowly but surely become everyone’s favorite current rapper…and by “everyone” I mean every backwards cap-wearing- jeans-under-the-ass teenager. All I seem to hear from people who only listen to “real Hip-Hop” is that he’s a wannabe who doesn’t rap about anything remotely interesting. They are right. I totally agree, but so what? Let’s be honest here, the nice thing about Mac Miller is that he’s just a cute little teenager … who’s just recently turned 20 (but let’s still call him a teenager for today, so I can go easy on him.)
Yes, it’s true all he raps about is getting high, new Nike’s, frozen pizza… Inspirational stuff, I know, but hello? In all seriousness, what is a suburban white boy from Pennsylvania supposed to rap about? “Hanging out in the corners all times at night with the cruel people?”. He raps about what’s good to him. If I’ve missed out on any recent insightful songs he’s made, I apologize, but I gave up listening to him after ‘Frick Park Market’. “I’mma feed the world you can put it on my tab”…. Really?

HOWEVER, people dissing him, including myself need to stop for a second and acknowledge the following fact(s)
1) Firstly, He is making more money than you and me put together, and has managed to establish a loving and solid fan base for himself. Bieber is a prime example! He gets the shit ripped out of him. As much as some of his music gives me shivers, as I have the tendency to squirm when I listen to him, its undeniable that he’s an unfortunately pubescent 17 year old with an angelic voice. He’s one of the richest people in the world with over 16 million followers on Twitter. He must have done something right.
2) Back to Mac Miller, also known as Most Dope, Easy Mac and my personal fave… Malcolm…I admit that in all fairness he’s just a young guy with a dream. While the majority of us wants to expose our talents but don’t have the guts, he took the risk and succeeded. Props to him! Yes, he only raps about basic things but then again, if you have no hardships why not rap about up-beat things? He’s entertaining. If I’m at a friend’s house with a group of people, I secretly get happy if one of his songs comes up on the speakers.
One thing I must mention though and this is where the real deal comes in: I strongly believe that he is overrated. Hip-Hop is about a lot more than rapping. People who listen to it are mostly drawn to it, because of the beat, and then the lyrics. If the beat were of no interest, then people would just go to poetry readings. At the end of the day rap songs are 50% poetry and 50% beat. Seeing as Malcolm has failed spectacularly on the poetry aspect, due to his lyrically handicapped disabilities, at least he has the catchy beats to save him, right? Umm… NO! It gives me great displeasure to announce that his beloved ‘Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza’ originally comes from Lord Finesse’s ‘Hip 2 Da Game’.
On that note, this leads me to introduce my main goals in my future blogs on Revolt: Bringing back Hip-Hop and Underground to its best.
