As many of you may or may not know, There has really never been a Hip-Hop Artist that really shined on a major level out of the DMV area… Wale may have come close but still has away to go to even earning respect in the Hip-Hop game as a MC. Trey P. from Ontap writes a very interesting article and brings the world closer the the DMV Scene.
“With the release of his first album, Attention Deficient, DC hip hop turned the mirror outward and, despite the album’s title, the nation was in fact paying attention when Wale played to a packed house at the MTV Video Music Awards. To the DC scene it seemed like the Nigerian-born rapper’s career would be big enough to pull the entire region up by its bootstraps”
““As far as the music, we have a lot of different kinds of sound here,” he said. “I mean, you may hear a Tabi Bonney, who has his own unique sound, then you may hear an Oy Boyz, who have a street sound, then a Mullyman or a Wordsmith, who may have a more lyrical sound. I love that the most about the DMV; it’s like no other market.”
“David Simmons, the 2009 DMV hip hop artist of the year who goes by the moniker “Whitefolkz,” has been a fixture on the local scene for a handful of years now. One of only a few Caucasians who has gained respect from the largely African-American crowds he plays to, Folkz, as he’s known, has described the situation through a familiar analogy.
“It’s like crabs in a barrel. One crab gets to the top of the bucket and the others latch on to the first crab, trying to pull themselves out but they all just ending up falling back into the barrel,” said Folkz. “Somebody won’t like that I said that, but I can only keep 1000%.”
